The UK Ancestry Visa permits Commonwealth nationals with a grandparent born in the United Kingdom to live and work in the UK without restriction for an initial five (5) year period.
The UK Ancestry Visa may also lead to being eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and UK Nationality.
To obtain an Ancestry visa it is necessary for applicants to fulfil the basic prerequisites set out by the UK Immigration Authorities.
Applicants must be from a Commonwealth country, aged 17 or over and have a grandparent who was born in the UK.
In addition to that, applicants must also be able to work in the UK and be able to support themselves and any dependants.
The Ancestry visa entitles holders to seek employment in any field in the UK for a period of up to five (5) years.
After five years, holders may be able to apply for ILR as long as they continue to meet the requirements of their visa and demonstrate that they have been employed during this time and not travelled outside the UK for longer than the permissible time periods.
